ABC Faith: Listen to Wise Counsel

" Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."

-Proverbs 11:14

" The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice."*Proverbs 12:15

Teenagers are so much fun aren't they? For some reason they think they have life all figured out and no one can tell them otherwise. Well that might be a little stretch and not all teenagers are that way, but it's close. I did a lot of my own thinking myself as a teenager and I remember thinking all my dad did was lecture me, but I don't recall thinking my parents knew nothing. Now, of course, as an adult with teenagers of my own I go to my parents for advice and have come to realize that they know a lot because they have already been there, done that.

But isn't that like everyone, not just teenagers. Even as adults it is sometimes hard to listen to others and their advice. It's hard to admit we still don't know it all.

Proverbs advises us to listen to wise counsel many times over including Proverbs 15:31-33, Proverbs 19:20 and Proverbs 27:9. Five times in just those few chapters and many more throughout scripture. I believe the reason God tells us to listen to wise counsel (this usually comes from those older than us), is because they can help the best. Like I said with my parents, they have already lived through these years and have gained experience I have yet to. Also it seems that the older one gets the more knowledge they have acquired and their perspective is much more rational and mature.

So seek advice from others, don't act like the teenager who knows it all. Everyone can stand learning a few new things from time to time. Also God will direct you to those who can help in any situation you find yourself looking for counsel. No matter what, there is someone who has been there, done that and they can help you through any struggles.
