Batter in a Bowl

Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

I enjoy baking, especially desserts. My children usually enjoy baking with me too and when they were little they enjoyed licking out the bowl, the beaters, and the spoons (but who doesn’t, right). What I’ve noticed more though, now that they’re older, is not so much the help so they can lick the bowl but so they can follow the recipe and mix it together.

I’ve discovered I’m not the best at making cookies but cakes, brownies, pretty much most other desserts I’m good at. I usually follow the recipe closely but as I get older I am getting better at following my instincts as to amounts and ingredients. I’ve been able to teach my children if the batter doesn’t look right there’s ways to tweak it. But if it doesn’t taste right then we know we didn’t follow the recipe and missed an ingredient or used the wrong ingredients. But that rarely happens and we all get a chance to enjoy the batter in the bowl.

Our lives are like the batter in the bowl. Sometimes the things we put into our bodies, minds, and actions leave a bad taste to others or even ourselves. But when we add the right amounts and flavors we can become great people leaving others with a sweet taste and we can share Jesus so much easier.

Jesus gave us the recipe for that kind of good batter. In Matthew 22:37-39 “Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second, Love your neighbors as yourself.” Also in Luke 6:31 the golden rule “Do to others what you would want them to do to you.”

I believe that is a sweet recipe we all can follow with the main ingredient-Love. Love God, love yourself, love others and everything will fall into place. And if you have a problem with someone, smile and keep your mouth shut walking on as you remember the golden rule.
