Consider the Clouds

“Then I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and sitting on the white cloud was One who looked like a Son of Man. He had a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.” -Revelation 14:14

I love cloud watching at times. Especially when they are fluffy enough to form shapes or look like an animal or person. While on long trips it’s a fun pastime too. Sometimes at night the clouds can also look pretty as they roll across the bright moon leaving just enough light between them to cast shadows from the moon. When I was a kid, I liked the show Care Bears, so you can guess where my imagination took me with the big fluffy clouds that rolled across the sky. But out of all the clouds I’ve seen, my favorite are the big fluffy clouds that cover the sun, yet the rays shoot out from beyond the clouds reflecting brightly and majestically.

When I think about the clouds a few things come to mind. The first thing is what makes them hang in the sky and not fall to the ground like the snow, rain or falling stars. Of course, there is the correct scientific reason, but I learned something that looks beyond that. They hang because God has chosen to allow them too. Why? So we can enjoy the natural wonders of His creation. Job 37:16, -So, clouds hang in the sky so we can know the miracles of God who knows everything.

Second, I thought about how quickly clouds can change in the wind. This also can make cloud watching fun. But when I think about the changes, I see we can become the same way. If we are not rooted in Jesus and know, believe, and live His words through the Bible, all it will take is just a little wind to change us and push us away from God. Romans 12:2 warns us not to be conformed to this world. What we do, say and how we live should always be to God’s glory so when the winds come, we won’t be changed.

Dr. Caroline Leaf has said, “As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with healthy thoughts.”

Let’s leave the constant changes to the clouds and our only change draw us closer to God.

Finally, my favorite thought on clouds. When I see those rays of sunlight shooting beyond the clouds only one thought comes to mind. Jesus’ second coming and how it will look with the clouds full of angels descending to this earth with Jesus right in the middle ready to take us home.

One of our friends Buddy Houghtaling writes a song to the weatherman about clouds. He talks about how they predict the weather and he tells them, understand as you talk, one of these days the clouds will be full of angels and that cloud means we’re going to go home. One of those clouds will be bringing Jesus. It's time to go home.

So, next time you go out cloud watching maybe these thoughts will cross your mind. Marvel at God’s awesome creation and remember to stay firmly planted in Jesus and have hope of His promised second coming with all His angels to take us home.
