Eagle or Chicken

1 Peter 2:11-12 “ Dear friends, you are like foreigners and strangers in this world. I beg you to avoid the evil things your bodies want to do that fight against your soul. 12 People who do not believe are living all around you and might say that you are doing wrong. Live such good lives that they will see the good things you do and will give glory to God on the day when Christ comes again.”

A rancher, one day, decided to go into the mountains to hunt. While walking he came across an Eagles nest with eggs in it. He decided to take one home and place it under a hen sitting on her eggs. Eventually the egg hatched with the other baby chicks. Mama hen took care of the eaglet along with her chicks, raising it as one of her chickens.

The eagle made its home in the barnyard along with the other chickens. It ate and slept just like a chicken. One day an eagle came from the nearby mountains swooped down over the barnyard looking for prey. The mother had immediately squawked calling her chicks and the eagle to safety.

As the eagle swooped low it let out a scream only made by Eagles. The baby chicks heeded their mothers call and ran to hide, but the baby eagle responded to the call of the other eagle. The baby eagle took flight and joined the eagle in the sky.

This reminds me of us. We are born of God, yet in a place not meant for us. We have learned to live this life because we don't know any different. We work, we raise our families, we go along as the world moves along.

If this is what we know to do, how do we know we belong somewhere else? Scripture is full of encouragement and promises of our true identity. We are the - apple of God's eye -Zachariah 2:8; the flock of His people -Zachariah 9:16; a crown of glory in the hand of your God -Isaiah 62:3; the temple of God -1 Corinthians 3:17. we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ -Romans 8:17; we are Kings and priests of our God -Revelation 5:10; we were created to bear His likeness -Genesis 1:27. most importantly we are God's children -1 John 3:1.

Living on this sin filled earth it has been easier and easier to conform to the way the world lives, to be like others and act like them. But as Christians we also know there is a God who has created us, and our true identity is in Him. Unlike the baby eagle, we can be like our Father when we know Him, spend time with Him, and listen to His voice. Satan is the one who is sneaking in to take us as his prey and Jesus is the one who we can run to and hide in for safety.

Once we know our true identity, we have a hope in this world we have to live in. Yes, we still must work, raise our family and live here but we don't have to follow the crowd. The Bible tells us that those who trust in God will rise up as eagles in the sky, and one day Jesus will come in the clouds of the sky, with a call for His children. Like the baby eagle we will leave what we know and join Jesus in the air and take our place as heirs to our true identity. Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Take hope in this beautiful promise and even if we are here on this earth living the best we know, remember we are only here temporarily, God has a better home waiting for us. We are God's children and He can't wait to see us again.
