Etiquette for the Occasion

Joshua 1:8 "Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything."

During a stay overnight at the White House a guest found himself in an embarrassing situation. At breakfast the guest was seated at President Coolidge’s right side. To his surprise he saw Coolidge take his coffee cup, pour the greater portion of its contents into a deep saucer, and add a little cream and sugar.

Feeling panicked he decided he better follow what the president did, not sure what was proper etiquette, in front of the president. He immediately poured his own coffee into a saucer. He froze with horror as he watched Coolidge place the saucer on the floor for his cat. … ‘Thesaurus of Anecdotes’

Sometimes knowing the right etiquette for certain occasions can leave us feeling embarrassed when we don't know what to do. How would you act if you were in the presence of someone famous? How would you act if you met the president? What about the queen? Of course, there is usually someone who would tell us what to do, how to act, what to say. However, not everything can be rehearsed, and we might find ourselves a little embarrassed if we’re not prepared.

Have you ever thought about when you enter the presence of our Lord, Savior, and King? He is above anyone on this earth that we would deem important enough to learn proper etiquette for. Do you ever feel that you are not worthy enough to be in the Lord's presence and when you are you always mess things up? We've all been there and maybe we still aren't sure of the proper protocol when entering the Lord's presence. There is hope, as in everything when it comes to Jesus. Scripture has provided the solution. Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise.”

It's that simple. We don't have to be rich and famous; we don't have to be free of sin and perfect. We can simply go before the Lord with gratitude and joy for all He has done in our lives.

Listen to the words of King David, he himself a king, a man after God's own heart, as he wondered who was important enough to be in the Lord's presence. “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in his holy place?” The answer, “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.” Psalm 24:3-4.

Hebrews even tells us that at the cross Jesus made a way to God for us. We can approach His throne with confidence and receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need, Hebrews 4:16.

There might be “proper” etiquette when we are among important people in this world but with Jesus we don't need to worry or feel unprepared or embarrassed. The Bible clearly tells us that the only things we need, to approach Jesus with, is a pure and expectant heart and understand that before honor comes humility. Jesus wants to hear from us and share with us and we should never feel afraid to talk with Him, He is listening and answering each of us daily. Take some time today and spend it with our Lord and see what new things you can learn.

I hope you have found some extra time to read through Galatians each blog. What new things have you had the chance to learn, what things have you been refreshed in learning. It is always good to take a few extra minutes in each day to slow down and open God's Word. Even just a few minutes can give us the boost we need to keep going through our busy days. We can find encouragement, hope, healing, and so much more when we let the Holy Spirt speak to us and show us new things God has given. Today we will continue with our study with Galatians 4:1-7.
