1 Peter 2:9 "But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
Monday we started off our week learning how as Christians we have been given ways to act and be more like Jesus. Like royals of today, there are ways people look at us and expect to see something different. When we wear those paper crowns at Burger King we pretend we are more royal. So let's continue to learn ways we can act in Romans 12:9-21 so others can see Jesus in us and what will happen one day as we choose to follow Jesus.
6. Wish good for those who harm you. Wish them well and do not curse them. -verse 14
One of the hardest things to do is wish well, to people who make you mad or have hurt you in some way, but as children of God we are commanded to do just that. The golden rule ‘Do to others what you would have them do to you.’ You’re human, they are human, and we all make mistakes. If you have to fake it till you make it, put on your smile and do just that.
7. Be happy with those who are happy, and sad with those who are sad. -verse 15
When others feel and see how genuine you are and can relate on the same level, they are less likely to stay away from you because you are approachable. So be there for them, show them support and kindness and let God work through you.
8. Live in peace with each other. Do not be proud but make friends with those who seem unimportant. Do not think how smart you are. -verse 16
The best way to live at peace is to be as wise as owls and as gentle as lambs. We all are born of Christ therefore we all are equal. Let your words be positive even when everything is negative around you.
9. If someone does wrong to you, do not pay him back by doing wrong to him. Try to do what everyone thinks is right. Do your best to live in peace with everyone. -verse 17-18
Jesus tells us in Matthew we should turn the other cheek when someone does bad to us. Why, because giving our attention to evil just invites more evil into our lives. Even if the world is full of strife, we can live at peace by staying close to Jesus and turning the other cheek.
10. My friends do not try to punish others when they wronged you but wait for the Lord to punish them with his anger. It is written ‘I will punish those who do wrong, I will repay them,’ says the Lord. -verse 19
This is perhaps one of my favorite verses when dealing with those who have hurt me by their actions or words. Pray for peace in your heart and leave it up to God. I have said, we will all face Jesus and have to answer for our actions. I want my answers to be that I didn't fight back, and I allowed God to take care of things.
11. But you should do this: if your enemy is hungry you should feed them; if he is thirsty give him a drink. Doing this will be like pouring burning coals on his head. -verse 20
What better way to deal with those we have problems with, shower them with kindness. When someone is looking for a fight, kindness will send them into a tailspin which just might be enough to melt their hearts and they may be more open to receive Jesus.
12. Do not let evil defeat you but defeat evil by doing good. -verse 21
There is a lot happening around us and it's caused a lot of hate, anger and distrust. We can either fall into the same path or choose Jesus and show kindness and love to those full of evil. With Jesus on our side, we can defeat anything.
Sure, there are Royals in our world today and so many look up to them and watch their every action. But to be a child of the King of creation is so much sweeter. We are God's ambassadors to this world, and we are the ones who share Jesus to others. It's wonderful that we have been given a way to conduct ourselves in 1 Peter.
Even though it's fun to play with the paper crowns we have been given a beautiful promise. On the day of Salvation will be given a Royal Crown -2 Timothy 4:8. we will enter the gates of heaven as God's Royal family. What a joy, what a privilege. Next time you find a restaurant that has paper crowns, go ahead and put one on and remember you are Royal, you are a child of the King and you are important.
