“You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lamp stand so the light shines for all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven."
-Matthew 5:14-16
I like lighthouses. I enjoy going around Michigan and finding the lighthouses, hearing the stories behind them, and seeing the vintage things that were around when people still lived in lighthouses and worked them. Each lighthouse is built differently with its own history and story behind them. Some have seen terrible storms and weathered through, some have saved lives, and some have seen families stemmed from generations raised in them. They are just an interesting part of our history.
Although each lighthouse is different, not one is the same as another, they all serve the same purpose. They are on the water’s edge to guide and protect boats and ships. Their light guide's sailors’ home; keeps ships from crashing on the shoreline, and warns of storms on the horizon or storms that are going to happen.
When I think about lighthouses I’m reminded of a verse in the Bible, Matthew 5:14-16. Jesus clearly calls us His lighthouses. Not because He needs to find His way, but so we can be a light to those around us. We can help guide others who don’t know Jesus, to Him. We can help other Christians who are drowning or feel lost. And in the kindest way, we can warn others who are on a destructive path, of the consequences they are falling into. The verses go on to say that when we live so others see the good things we do, they can praise Jesus too.
We are God’s lighthouses and like each lighthouse, not one of us is the same, yet we all serve with one goal. Share Jesus to everyone. No matter our history or our path in life, we can all tell our story of how Jesus has worked in our life, helped in our struggles, and has blessed in many ways.
Remember that childhood song in church. This Little Light of Mine, I’m gonna let it shine. Today let your light shine and don’t let anyone blow it out. Shine until Jesus comes and then shine some more.
Matthew 28:19 “So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
