Like Father, Like Son

Ephesians 5:1-2 “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”

It’s been fun watching my son grow up. There were, of course, trials and tears but for the most part, fun. Ever since he was little, I have been able to watch his daddy teach him all sorts of things from hunting, to fishing, how to survive in the woods, track animals, take care of vehicles and many other things. When my son was younger I thought he did many things like his dad because dad was dad, but I’ve noticed more, now that my son is in his 20’s, it’s not only that. Now my son makes his own choices and does what he wants, yet he’s just like his dad as much now as when he was little. He likes hunting, fishing, shooting, and of course cars. What makes me smile though is when his dad isn’t around and he’s doing things just like dad taught. He is happy when he can independently do or buy things that dad has bought over the years, for himself. Or when he catches fish or does something with his car, he wants dad to see or he seeks dad’s thumbs up, when he figures things out. He’s even recently said, “If anyone’s going to copy my dad it’s supposed to be me.” My son has even started working in the same trade as dad and they get to work together, which is a good thing in many ways but not so good in others. I don’t always like some of the habits my son has picked up from his dad, but I love how much they are like each other.

Jesus once said, “If anyone has seen me, they have seen my Father.” A perfect example of, like father like son. Jesus also added, “I am about doing my Father’s business and God is love.” Jesus looked up to His father, loves his father and set out to show us who His Father was in the way He lived. Then He showed us how to be like Him and live like Him and follow Him.

As Christians we are shown many times in scripture to be, in essence, like father like son. We should want to be like Jesus, who lived a perfect and sinless life. We should be excited to share with others who Jesus is, who God is, because we are their family and God is also our Father. Like my son said about copying his dad, we should say, “If anything, I want to copy Jesus, to follow in His footsteps.”

Jesus lived a perfect life while here on earth, showing us how to live holy lives. We might have a sinful nature and form worldly habits that aren’t great. But when we try daily, to live more like Jesus and go to Him for help, we can become more like Him each day. Like a thumbs up from his dad, we should want the same thumbs up from Jesus. This can be achieved when we spend time in prayer and in devotions like Jesus taught.

Today I want to be like Jesus and copy His example for my life and I will share with everyone who listens, of Jesus and His goodness.
