Man's Best Friend

Revelation 3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you will eat with me.”

Dogs have been known as man’s best friend for as long as I can remember. Why? Because once they make you part of their pack, you're their human until they or you pass on. Dogs will love you unconditionally even when you yell at them or lose patience with them. They will faithfully stay yours and will be there for you through everything.

I've noticed with my dog how much I am her human and we are her family. Whenever one of us is sad or in tears she is there to offer many snuggles and kisses. She will even sit on our laps trying to be of comfort. She is not the best watch dog, but she is a fierce protector. When any of us gets playing around too roughly she is right there barking and trying to protect us. Luckily, she has yet to have to protect us from any real danger. She may be small, but she can be fierce when she wants to be. I love how she is always happy to see me even if I just stepped outside for a few minutes and she is a silly joy to have in our home. We have also added our new dog, who belongs to my son and he is just as sweet and loving as we have become part of his family. He is still a puppy so his protective skills are still growing but he will be by your side the minute you walk in the door and comes happily whenever he is called.

This is my dog but have you ever observed other dogs? They are very protective of new babies in the family, they can sense danger and will try to steer you away or if someone is hurt somewhere, they won't leave their side until they are found. They are great with direction and can lead you home if need be. I'm not a big, dog fan, but my little girl won my heart and life is not the same without her. Our new addition is also winning my heart as I am the one who is home the most with him.

I believe God is very much that. Like my dog wants to cuddle and love us when we are struggling or having a bad day, God knows those struggles and wants to comfort us. Let's look at a few more examples.

-God gets between you and trouble. Psalms 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior. My God is my rock. I can run to him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender.

My little dog probably couldn't protect me like a bigger dog might, but she would try. I'm glad I serve a bigger God that doesn't have to try. When trouble arises, He is right there shielding me and keeping me safe.”

-God will lead you out of danger. Psalm 121:5, 7-8 “The Lord guards you. The Lord is the shade that protects you from the sun. 7 The Lord will protect you from all dangers; he will guard your life. 8 The Lord will guard you as you come and go, both now and forever.”

My dog observes almost everything happening around her. She could be sound asleep, and the smallest movement will alert her enough to look around. She is always watching out the window when someone comes and goes. God wants us to be safe and smart, so He is always watching over us protecting us from all evil. That small voice telling you to steer away is the Holy Spirit watching over you. Isaiah 30:20

-God will not let you go until you are safely home with Him. 2 Timothy 4:18 “The Lord will save me when anyone tries to hurt me, and he will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Glory forever and ever be the Lord’s. Amen.”

We are human and we will fall and sometimes temptation will lead us astray. Like a dog can help its owner find their way home when lost, God promises to lead us home to Him. He will rescue us when we ask.

What is interesting is that dogs don’t have to be taught to be this way, it’s in their nature. If God can create a dog like that, then how much greater is He? If my dog, even as little as she is, can love and care for me like she does, then how much more does God love me and care for me!

Today, if you have put limits on God’s love for you. If you’ve allowed doubts to be greater than God. Let them go and thank Him for the promises of His word. Begin today to let Jesus in, to be fully there for you, and ask Him to be there for you. He is waiting but He won’t push, you have to open the door. Like a dog is man’s best friend. Dog spelled backwards is still “man’s best Friend”.
