Message in the Melody

“Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord.” -Ephesians 5:19

I enjoy music. Not the rock and roll, head banging music but hymns and gospel. I enjoy Christian music as well as country and of course the oldies. But what I love the most are the hymns. When you take the time to listen to the lyrics you will always find a message that will help strengthen your walk with God and the melodies usually are catchy and will stick in the mind for quite some time.

Songs have a way of staying with us, a way to persuade us for good or bad, and a way to pull our hearts. When we take time to read the Bible we learn that music was used many times for many occasions. For example, Psalm 95:1 tells us to sing to the Lord with joy for He is our Rock of salvation. In fact many of the Psalms talk about praise through song. In Exodus Miriam sang to the Lord with thanksgiving. Colossians 3:16, tells us to sing with gratitude with others. Sing when we’re happy, sing when we mourn, sing with thanksgiving, sing in victory and in trials, sing with instruments, just sing joyously, uplifting God.

If you have a chance, open a Hymnal, listen to Christian music (my favorite is Selah and Steve Green) and listen. Each song has a message in it for you and for me. A couple of songs that you might know… Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. Or, On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross the emblem of suffering and shame… so I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown. Some other favorites- Because He Lives, I Surrender All, How Great Thou Art, There is Sunshine in My Soul Today, and When We All Get to Heaven. These are just a few loved melodies and when we stop and listen we truly can find God’s presence in them and in us.

While going about your day and music comes across your path, listen to the melody. If it’s not Christian music, stop and think about whether the music really uplifts your heart to heaven or brings you down. If it doesn’t uplift, then maybe it’s time to find some new melodies.

Following is one of my favorite songs that truly speaks of joy in the Lord.

1. I have a song that Jesus gave me, It was sent from heaven above; There never was a sweeter melody, 'Tis a melody of love.

Chorus In my heart there rings a melody, There rings a melody with heaven's harmony; In my heart there rings a melody; There rings a melody of love!

2. I love the Christ who died on Calv'ry, For He washed my sins away; He put within my heart a melody, And I know it's there to stay.

Chorus In my heart there rings a melody, There rings a melody with heaven's harmony; In my heart there rings a melody; There rings a melody of love!

3. 'Twill be my endless theme in glory, With the angels I will sing; 'Twill be a song with glorious harmony, When the courts of heaven ring.

Chorus In my heart there rings a melody, There rings a melody with heaven's harmony; In my heart there rings a melody; There rings a melody of love!
