Reflection

Proverbs 27:19, “As water reflects your face, so your mind shows what kind of person you are.”

There's a story of a little girl who was with her parents visiting some friends. The father had already left the room he and his wife were sleeping in but soon the little girl joined her momma on the bed. Above the bed was picture of Jesus and passed the front of the bed was a dresser and large mirror. Laying in the bed the girl could see Jesus’ reflection in the mirror.

“I can see Jesus!” the little girl cried sitting up to get a better look.

As soon as she kneeled in between the picture and mirror she saw herself instead of Jesus. After a few more times of laying down and sitting up she said, “Mommy, when I can't see myself, I see Jesus; But every time I see myself I don't see Him.”

Have you ever noticed good manners usually show in those who keep Jesus in their lives? When we allow Jesus to grow in us our selfish nature begins to fall to the background. With Jesus in our hearts our attitude towards others begins to change. Good manners are simply the result of allowing Jesus to live through us. 2 Corinthians 3:18, “Our faces, then, are not covered. We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like him. This change in us brings ever greater glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

James 1:23-25 uses a mirror and our walk with Jesus as an example. “Those who hear God’s teaching and do nothing are like people who look at themselves in a mirror. They see their faces and then go away and quickly forget what they looked like. But the truly happy people are those who carefully study God’s perfect law that makes people free, and they continue to study it. They do not forget what they heard, but they obey what God’s teaching says. Those who do this will be made happy.”

Like the little girl, when we put ourselves between Jesus and our actions, we lose sight of Jesus in our lives. Our actions should never block out Jesus but reflect Him to those around us.

“The greatest characteristic a Christian can exhibit is this completely unveiled openness before God, which allows that person's life to become a mirror for others. When the Spirit fills us, we are transformed, and by beholding God we become mirrors. You can always tell when someone has been beholding the glory of the Lord, because your inner spirit senses that he mirrors the Lord's own character. Be aware of anything that would spot or tarnish that mirror in you.” -Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

5 Ways to reflect Jesus

1. Spend time with Jesus- Acts 4:13

2. Invite the Holy Spirit to change you from the inside out- Galatians 5:22-23

3. Cultivate a genuine interest in others- 1 John 3:16-18

4. Be available

5. Give God all the glory- Luke 8:39

Today as you see the reflection of Jesus are you getting in the way and obstructing His reflection or are you allowing Jesus to reflect through you to others?

James acknowledged that we will “encounter various trials” that will test our faith (James 1:2-3). Therefore, he went on to explain that we are to pray for wisdom (James 1:5-7). But how will we receive wisdom? God is not going to miraculously “zap” us with wisdom. Instead, we need to do what James described later in this chapter – hear God’s word and do it. We “must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger…in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:19-22). The psalmist said that the Lord’s testimonies are able to “[make] wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7). If we want to gain the wisdom necessary to know how to handle the hardships of life, we need to study the Scriptures. This is why I have found ways we can dig deeper into the scriptures and learn more about Jesus and what He wants for and from us. Let's start our new study and read 2 Thessalonians chapter 1.
