Set Your Mind

Colossians 3:1-2 “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Since March our T.V.s, our social media, radio’s, even friends and family have kept us quite busy getting caught up in the President and his comings and goings, Covid-19, protests, governors, politics and so much more. Have you found yourself becoming frustrated, anxious, maybe even, run down? Has the joy of life lost its way or have you lost satisfaction in things?

Colossians tells us that we need to keep our eyes focused on Jesus and things not of this world. When we allow the things of this world to pull our eyes and focus off Jesus, we lose sight of the joy He has set out for each of us. When we set our eyes and minds on Him, He will bring unexplainable satisfaction to our lives. What a great promise!

When someone asks, what do you want in life, you can find the answers, when you set your mind above and off of this world. Do you want peace? Focus on Jesus? Do you want love? Set your mind on things above, for God is love. Do you want patience? Set your mind on Jesus who is patient with you. Do you want joy? Set your mind on our Joy giver. Do you want kindness? Set your mind on things above. Do you want gentleness? Set your mind on the Shepherd. Do you want goodness? Set your mind on God, who is good. Do you want to be faithful? Set your mind on things above. Do you want self-control? Turn off the worldly gossip, T.V., news, and so forth. Do you want meaning and purpose in your life? Keep seeking things from above.

When I am the most frustrated or feel the lack of contentment, peace, joy. I realize I have been focusing on the things of this earth way too much. For me it’s mostly social media and I realize I need to step back and take a break from scrolling. I realize I have let my faith slip a little because I have “set my mind” on things that are of this earth.

I know I still have to live here and function but there is no reason I can’t use my time more wisely and open scripture more or talk with Jesus more. My peace has to come from knowing that no matter what, God’s got this, He is in control and He knows my beginnings to my endings. I can’t and don’t need to control the outcomes in this world, I just need to keep my eyes focused on Jesus and have faith He will take care of my needs.

So, how about you? What are you focusing on today? The choice of where to set our minds is ours, above or on this earth. As the warm days of summer set in let’s turn our focus off the last several months and enjoy the beauty God has set before us. Let God handle the rest His way and in His time.
