The Check-Up

“Examine yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. You know that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you fail the test.” 2 Corinthians 13:5

Have you had your check-up lately? Most of us can say, sure we’ve seen our doctors and our ticker is still ticking. We even take our children for check-ups to make sure they are healthy and growing the right way. It’s good if you have a doctor you can see at least once a year to make sure you’re well. But today I am talking about your spiritual check-up. When was the last time you had that?

David clearly shares with us in Psalm the importance of spiritual check-ups. ‘Search me, O God and know my heart’- Psalm 139:23. We should be asking ‘Do I feel close to God?’ ‘Does my faith work?’ ‘Am I trusting God more?’ ‘Am I bearing fruits for Jesus?’

David knew he not only needed a simple check-up, but a heart check-up. ‘Search my heart, test me…See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way of everlasting’ -Psalm 139:23-24.

David knew he would struggle with temptations and he had already. He knew he needed God to help him so he made sure he was doing what he could in his spiritual walk by examining his actions and thoughts. Not just once a year or only once but on a regular basis. David was telling God, check me out, I want to live for you, and I want to improve. Show me where I can improve and help me reach my goals.

A good heart check could include asking yourself. ‘Why am I here?’ ‘What is my mission?’ ‘What unique way has God called me to serve Him and help others?’ It’s always good to stop and look at where we are and where we want to be.

To help find health problems doctors recommend regular check-ups. We need to remember to regularly do a spiritual check-up and Mark 12:30 gives us the best formula to follow. “Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength”. Ask…

Do I love the Lord with all my heart? Jesus first loved me so do I return the love to Him? Are the desires in this world more important to me than my treasures in Christ? Let God’s peace live in your hearts.

Do I love the Lord with all my soul? Am I listening to God speak to me or do I follow my own self-centered wants? Have I allowed God to fill me with the fruit of the spirit?

Do I love the Lord with all my mind? Am I focusing my thoughts of Jesus or letting worldly things occupy my thoughts? Are my thoughts helping find solutions or cause problems? Am I working towards unity or division? Are the things of this world distracting me away from time with God or do I make time with God filling my mind with scripture and Gods leading or just spend time with Him when it’s convenient for me?

Do I love the Lord with all my strength? At my weakest do I depend of God to be my strength. When facing struggles or trials do I look to God in faith to see me through? Do I put on my armor and stand against the enemy with all my strength, defending God my Savior and Friend or do I fall into temptations and like Peter, deny the Lord when confronted by the enemy?

A healthy lifestyle requires three things to keep balance. Our health, our physical, and our spiritual life must all be balanced through God. We can eat all the right things and take time daily to do some exercise but when we don’t take the time to fill our lives with God’s word and we are not allowing Jesus into our life, “I am the Bread of Life and the Living Water” -John 6:35, John 7:37-39.

God is our great Physician and He knows what we need more than we know ourselves and He is looking out for our best interest. You trust your doctors here on this earth to take care of you and give you the right diagnosis so trust your Creator to know you even more and help you have the right balance in life spiritually.
