The Right Combination

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its salty taste, it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing, except to be thrown out and walked on.”

During my daughter's last year of high school, I was able to teach her chemistry. Not one of my favorite subjects but as we got into the chapters I learned some things I had forgotten when in high school myself. Actually, I had fun learning things and found that the way chemicals work together is quite cool (although my daughter might disagree). Many of our experiments required mixing chemicals and seeing the kind of reactions we’d get. Some are interesting, some explosive, and some with the right combination work together to produce something good.

One of those elements is sodium and it's very active and easily links on to another element.

Chlorine on the other hand is a poisonous gas by itself.

What's interesting is that when you combine the two you will find that the chlorine stabilizes the sodium, and the sodium neutralizes the poison of the chlorine.

The result of the combination formed sodium chloride is also known as table salt. Table salt has been used to preserve meat, add flavor to food and in the olden days, before our modern medicine, doctors used it to clean and heal wounds. Even today, gargling with saltwater helps a sore throat.

For Christians there is a combination essential in our life that we need to use together because pursuing them alone can be dangerous but together can help us become ‘salt of the earth’. Love and truth.

Love is one of the most intense emotions that we experience as humans. It is a variety of different feelings in all types of ranges with no limits or conditions by a person. Like sodium, love is extremely active, sometimes blind and is willing to leak onto strange or perverse doctrines and can be tossed around in a sea of emotions.

Truth for Christians is facts we believe that are laid out in the Bible. We believe every answer to life and other truths on any topic can be found in scripture. Yet truth spoken by itself can be offensive, maybe even poisonous, when used the wrong way. It can kill a person's longing for the presence of God if taught the wrong way.

Yet when truth and love are combined it can form a sweet combination and find the right flavor. Truth can calm the emotions of love and when we speak the truth in love it can bring people to Jesus. We can heal those spiritual wounds, encourage the best in each other and bring out the unique gifts of every person.

‘Each day as you deal with others, seek to let your words and actions be grounded in truth and delivered with love.’ (Breakfast with God)

I hope you have been able to join me as we have been reading along through Galatians. Each time we open the Bible there is always new truths and insights we can learn and sometimes it's great to refresh ourselves on things we have already learned and maybe learn something new with fresh eyes. Today we will be reading Galatians 5:16-25. As always there is a short study you can click on and read to help you along or simply read and let the Holy Spirit lead you.
