Where is the Darkness?

Proverbs 4:18 “The way of the good person is like the light of dawn, growing brighter and brighter until full daylight.”

Once upon a time a cave lived under the ground, as caves have the habit of doing. It had spent its lifetime in darkness.

One day it heard a voice calling to it, “Come up into the light; come and see the sunshine.”

But the cave retorted, “I don’t know what you mean. There isn’t anything but darkness.” Finally, the cave was convinced to venture forth. He was amazed to see light everywhere and not a speck of darkness anywhere. He felt oddly warm and happy.

Turnabout was fair play and so, looking up to the Sun, the Cave said, “Come with me and see the darkness.”

The Sun asked, “What is darkness?”

The Cave replied, “Come and see!”

One day the Sun accepted the invitation. As it entered the cave it said, “Now show me your darkness.” But there was no darkness!

I love this little story because it reminds me of who Jesus is. John 1:9 tells us that Jesus is the Word and the Light who gives light to every man. Also, John records Jesus proclaiming, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life. -John 8:12

After dark I don’t always turn my lights on in the living room if I’m not in there. It gets quite dark and if I happen to need something in that room or want to check on something I can’t just walk in and find it. But, once I turn on the light the entire room can be seen and I find what I need. Sometimes I may be able to strain my eyes or use the glow of the moon or maybe the little light coming from a power box or something. The problem is, if I attempt to walk into the room I would probably stumble over things on the floor.

When we don’t have Jesus in our lives it is like finding your way through the dark using what little light you might have. You won’t see everything around you and the sin and temptations will cause you to stumble and possibly fall. Like the cave, you might not know anything different because you have not been shown anything else.

Jesus has said though, He has come to bring us light. Like when I turn on my light switch the entire room lights up and I can see everything. With Jesus we can see the world around us and the sins and temptations of Satan are exposed. We now have no reason to stumble or fall because Jesus is showing the way to Him. Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 18:28, “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning, my God turns my darkness into light.” Once we have the light of Jesus in our lives, we won’t know darkness. Like the sun who knew no darkness because everywhere it went it brought light.

That is the light we can bring with us wherever we go. With Jesus in our lives we are full of light. Matthew 5:16 even tells us to let our lights shine so others can see Jesus in us. Since the beginning of creation when God said, “Let there be light,” He has wanted to share His light of life with us. Through the Old Testament God’s light is spoken through finding light in His promises, light to show the way, light of hope and salvation and more. In the New Testament we see Jesus as our light, how we can be part of the light and share the light to others and at the close of the world Jesus, our Light, will come again to take us to heaven where God’s light will be shining so bright we will have no need of the sun or moon again.

1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” We are God’s chosen world. Let’s stop living in caves of darkness and be like the sun and light up the world with God’s love and share with those around us of the promise of salvation when we choose Jesus, our Light of life.
