Eyes on the Sparrow

Matthew 10:29-31 “Two sparrows cost only a penny, but not even one of them can die without your Father’s knowing it. God even knows how many hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.

There is a place I enjoy when visiting the zoo, the bird sanctuary. Walking in hearing all the different songs and seeing the variety of colors, shapes and sizes of all the types of birds makes me smile.

Sometimes just sitting on your front porch morning or evening and hearing their chirps can be relaxing. If you’re a bird watcher I’m sure you’ve enjoyed just sitting and watching the simplicity of the birds.

There is something about the birds that is unique to listen to or even watch. Their life is spent living in the trees flying here to there, not worrying about the world below. They sing their songs, fill our trees, build their nests and, even though most of them are small, they just keep going, they seem happy.

We know this because of God’s greatness in creation and the care He put into the birds, but there still can be a lesson learned.

When we feel discouraged about things in life or that gray cloud seems to be looming about. When we feel lonely and long for our heaven home. We can find the strength we need in Matthew 10:29-31.

Think about the sparrow, how small they are. Jesus still keeps His eyes on them and keeps them safe. How much more will Jesus keep us safe and in His care? His eyes ever watching over us and His arms holding us.

Jesus is our portion; Jesus is our Friend. We don’t need to doubt or fear, Jesus is leading our steps.

There is a song I love that keeps me encouraged and the chorus speaks in such a way I find myself singing it throughout the day when I think about this song. The chorus goes, ‘I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free. His eyes are on the sparrow and I know He watches me.’

When you need encouragement, when you need strength read the words to this song or even look it up and listen. Let’s be like the birds and sing, be happy and leave the worries of this world in God’s hands.

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,

I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear,

And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;

Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,

I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,

When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,

I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,

I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.
