God is Bigger Than...

Zephaniah 3:17, “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

When my children were younger, we spent many Sabbaths watching Veggie Tales while it was still under its original creators. They are fun stories kids can relate to yet teach valuable lessons about God and what the Bible teaches. There are two songs that stick out in my mind that, even today, I can turn to when I need some encouragement. Here are a few of the lyrics.

“God is bigger than the boogeyman…”

“King Saul says, ‘But Goliath…’ David replies, ‘He's big, but God's bigger. And when I think of Him, that's when I figure. With His help, little guys can do big things too.”

Life is hard and has a tendency to bring us down. Satan is this world's boogeyman or Goliath. His goal, do whatever it takes to get you away from God. He will come at us with our feelings, our busyness, our families. Anything that makes us lose sight of how great a God we walk with daily.

One of his first go-to is -your regrets, your past, your sins, even your mistakes, but remember, God is bigger. Regrets: Proverbs 4:25-27. Past: Isaiah 43:18-19. Sins: Colossians 1:14. Mistakes: Romans 8:28

-        Do we all have regrets, certainly. Some may even be as fresh as this month, this week, this day, this hour. Proverbs tells us to keep looking forward and not look back. Our focus should be forward not backward. We should be making plans that keep us on God's path. Let go of regrets, form new habits, embrace truth and look forward to each new day as a new opportunity to start fresh with Jesus.

-        Yes, we all have a past, some good some not so good and we all have made mistakes and will undoubtedly make more. Luckily, we have a Savior who says, release the past- Philippians 3:13-14 and trust in God's redemption. We can't undo our actions, but God can turn the mistakes into something beautiful and work everything out for good.

-        We all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory- Romans 3:23. When satan reminds us of them we need to remind him, God is bigger. God says when you confess your sins, God forgives you and not only cleanses you- John 1:9 but sends them as far as the east is from the west forgetting them completely- Psalm 103:12. You are made new in Christ and there is no use harboring something God has already released.

What about your fears, worries, and doubts? Fears: 2 Timothy 1:7. Worries: Joshua 1:9. Doubts: Matthew 21:21.

-        It's hard not to worry. Money could be tight and the budget small. We may be sick and not getting better or a loved one could be sick. What keeps you awake at night with worry? It's a tough one to let go of. God may be bigger, but when we have to rely on faith over physically seeing Him, worry is an easy state to fall into. This is when we need to focus in on truth- God will provide. We are still His creation, like the birds and animals. He takes care of them, and He will take care of us. Instead of worry focus on God's Kingdom and His will in your life. Everything else will fall into place.

-        Fear and doubt are some of satan's favorite weapons. Yet, we have been given a greater weapon from a God who is bigger- His Word. Jesus used God's Word to defeat satan and we can too. You are given strength from God to overcome all things. Whatever may come your way, never let fear or doubt creep in because no matter what- God's got this. He goes before us and behind us to fight all our battles- Deuteronomy 31:8, 2 Chronicles 20:15.

A lot of our feelings lead to anxiety or even depression, maybe even feeling lost.

Anxiety: Philippians 4:6-7. Depression: Isaiah 41:10. Lost: Psalm 34:18.

-        These feelings hit us all, in one form or another, and can either keep us down or make us stronger. Emotional struggles doesn't mean you're a flawed Christian, it means you're human. The devil will try to convince you that those thoughts or feelings in this way must mean you have failed; your faith is not strong enough. I can say no, because my God is bigger than... We have even been given the weapons to help us through them- prayer and thanksgiving. Jesus never intended us to go at this alone or suffer alone. He invites us to come to Him- Matthew 11:28-30. He alone gives us the calm, the peace of mind, the direction we need to overcome. Satan knows these feelings can take our eyes off Jesus, but God says, with Me this is a battle you can overcome. Lean on Jesus, look to Jesus and He will help you through these feelings.

If all else fails, the devil will come at us with all sorts of temptations. And, yes, we've fallen into them a time or two or three. The good news is that, even if we fall, it's not the end for us. God is still bigger, God is Creator of the universe, and God always provides a way out of any temptations when we go to Him for help- 1 Corinthians 10:13.

So, go ahead, tell satan to go sit on a tack and don't come back. You are human, you are flawed, you will have good days and bad. No matter where you’re at, what you've been through or are going through now. God is bigger than the boogeyman and with Him we can do big things too. Have faith, go to God in prayer, and watch how He wins the battles for you.
