Joshua 1:8 “Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything.”
Do you feel the Bible is just another book filled with interesting stories of our past? Maybe it's a good book to read to help show you how to live a life of good. Have you ever just opened the Bible and read a verse or two just to check it off your to-do list for the day? What does the Bible mean to you?
There are interesting stories you can read, and it is full of ways to help us become better people, better Christians. Even just reading a few verses a day can help encourage, strengthen, and grow your heart as a Christian. Yet the Bible is so much more when we choose to dig deeper and truly learn what Jesus is teaching us. We can learn the true character of God and how we can live like He created us to live. We learn promises to get us through this life of ups and downs. We can learn about salvation and find hope when there seems to be none. God's Word is not just something to check off the day’s list, it's full of love, grace and goodness. When we dive into God's Word, we have a chance to learn, to grow, and to find peace in Jesus. Let's look at what we can truly find when we open the Bible.
B- Book of grace- Romans 6:14 “Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law but under God’s grace.”
The Bible shows us God's love for everyone. Have you ever gotten pulled over for speeding and the cop let you go without a ticket? You deserved that ticket; you were breaking the law. Yet the cop had the goodness to let you go. Grace is a lot like that. We are sinners, we fall short of God's glory daily. We don't deserve salvation. Yet in God's goodness He sent Jesus to die in our place for our sins so we can have a chance for salvation and a reunion with God. Furthermore, when we stand before God in judgment for how we have lived, Jesus will step in front of us and say, “it's okay, I have covered them with grace, they are forgiven.” Praise God we are covered with the grace of God.
I- Inspired- 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right.”
The Bible is written by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is not just another book out there written by any author. Each book, each chapter, each verse inspired by God to help us learn more about Him and showing us how to live. Not just for those who lived in the Bible times but for all generations until the day of salvation, when we will learn at Jesus’ feet.
B- Book of light- Psalm 119:105 “Your word is like a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.”
Without the Bible the soul is dark. Jesus says He is the light of the world. When we walk in Him, we will see truths but when we don't follow Him it's like walking around in the dark. Have you ever tried that? Is not easy and you stumble a lot. When we dive into scripture, we are showing the path that will keep us from falling and lead us to salvation by the light of Jesus.
L- Leads me- Psalm 119:133 “Guide my steps as you promised; don’t let any sin control me.”
The Bible guides me how to live. We've talked a little about this already but let's elaborate. Jesus came to this earth to show us ways to live to be more like Him. He wanted to show us who God was, and He taught many things that can be applied to our lives, daily. Reading further through the New Testament we can learn from the apostles more ways to walk like Jesus, serve Jesus, share Jesus and so much more. The Old Testament shares stories where we can find faith like many before us, learn hope and how to trust God in all circumstances. When we dive into scripture allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us, we will be led to Jesus.
E- Everlasting- Matthew 24:35 “Earth and sky will be destroyed, but the words I have said will never be destroyed.”
The Bible will last forever and ever. The awesome thing about God is that He said He is the beginning and the end. His love will last forever, He will never leave us nor forsake us, and every word in the Bible will remain unchanged. It not only spanned the generations through the people in the Bible, but it still can be applied to our lives today and for generations after us. The Bible will always be here to lead and guide us. To help mold us and encourage us. As everlasting as God is, so is God’s Word.
So yes, open the Bible for some good stories, read scripture to learn how to live a better life, find time anytime to read the Bible. But, when you open the Bible, open it with a heart to learn more about Jesus. Allow your heart to be transformed more like Him. Use the words to help lift you up through all life has to offer, both good and bad. Dive into the Bible not just to check it off your list of tasks to do, but to have a deeper connection with Jesus and to want to learn and grow your relationship with your Creator and Savior. Remember the song you learned in church as a kid, “The B-I-B-L-E yes that’s the book for me. I stands alone on the word of God. The B-I-B-L-E”
