New Year, New Perspective

Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

Do you find it refreshing when the clock clicks over from 11:59 PM to 12:00 AM in a brand new year? If it's been a rough year, the idea of starting 12 new months can bring hope for better things to come. If you struggle personally a new year can bring a newness, a fresh start to be better, accomplish more, a change in our personal, maybe even spiritual life.
As we begin to tick off the days of the new year what plans, maybe even goals have you made or set for yourself? How's it going so far? For myself, I decided a long time ago to stop setting resolutions in the new year because I know myself and have always struggled to keep them. Instead, I set plans in place; nothing like “by this time I want... Or I will...” More like, “I need to try to... This will work if I do things in this order..." and so forth.
The thing is, if anyone truly knows me, they know I am a planner, I like lists and I like to get things checked off before moving on. I may have a dozen projects on the list going on at the same time, but I am working on them. I am also really bad at spontaneity. If my husband were to say, ‘let's just go where the wind takes us’ or ‘just get in the car it's a surprise’; I panic. I'm not great at not having a plan or direction.
Fortunately, I am getting a little wiser as I age and we have been married quite a while, so I am learning life doesn't always go as planned and that's okay. Big or small plans, a daily schedule, career strategies, family plans, all plans. They can be disappointing when they don't work out. The problem when plans don't necessarily work out the way we hope and things fall apart; we tend to fall apart. We tend to let today ruin our tomorrow's.
Today, let's see how we can change our perspective as we are beginning a new year and setting the many plans in place for the months to come. Last week we looked at the verse Lamentations 3:22-23, “The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop. They are new every morning; Lord, your loyalty is great.” My favorite line in this verse is ‘his mercies never end, they are new every morning.’
Our days are broken up into 24 hour segments. This means God has given us new opportunities each morning to start fresh. No matter how the day unfolded the day before. We have been given a chance to begin again. A new day to try again, hope again, and the best opportunity, the chance to watch God do something in our life we never expected!
God is a God of restoration. Even when we don't see it, He daily is working behind the scenes in our lives to bring about good in our lives- Jeremiah 29:11. He is a God of new beginnings where we may only see failure or plans falling through or apart. Where we see a lost cause, God sees potential for something better, something new.
Like I said, I'm getting better when Plan A seems to fall apart but I still struggle. I'm one who already plays out how the plan will unfold; I can see in my mind what we'd be doing and at times the joy is there before it even has happened. When things change or Plan A falls through, I still stumble at times with frustration. I, at times, forget to trust God's got this. He already has Plan B in place- Proverbs 3:5-6.
As we go into this new year no matter what happened yesterday, last week, or last year, God has a great plan for your life. God has you in the palm of His hands and know He already is working on how your year will unfold- Isaiah 49:13.
God does not want us to stay in the past; He doesn't want us to stay in 2025. He wants you to look forward in faith and get excited about the future He has planned for you. In fact, when you trust God's leading you will discover that God's Plan B is better than your Plan A.
As you go through 2026, change your perspective. When you're in the middle of a bad day (they will come), or a disappointing moment comes. Do not let the negative thoughts overtake you, do not fret. It's not over, it's never too late. Instead, it's a chance for a fresh start, a chance for something better. Each day is a new day!
As we try to stick to our new year resolutions and maybe have already failed at. Remember, tomorrow is a new opportunity to finish that project, get back to your exercise routine, read your Bible, trust Jesus and His plan for you. It's a chance to start again. Wake up and claim ‘This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it’- Psalm 118:24.
God is the God of do overs and new beginnings. The Lord's love and mercies are new every morning. No matter how Plan A turns out, what changes may come your way, if you let Jesus, He will give you a fresh start and it will be better than you can imagine. With God all things are possible. Trust God, change your perspective, and remember God's got this and God's got you
