The Pencil

1 Timothy 4:12 “Do not let anyone treat you as if you are unimportant because you are young. Instead, be an example to the believers with your words, your actions, your love, your faith, and your pure life.”

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box. “There are 5 things you need to know,” he told the pencil, “Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.”

One: “You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.”

Two: “You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.”

Three: “You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”

Four: “The most important part of you will always be what's inside.”

And Five: “On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.”

The pencil understood and promised to remember and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now replace the pencil with you. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best person you can be.

One: “You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in God’s hand. And allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.”

What is happening in your life right now? What story is being written? Know that you can always place your life in God’s hands letting God BE God in your life. With God you will experience more than any man can offer because God has given us all things that pertain to life.

Two: “You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but you’ll need it to become a stronger person.”

In faith, the friction of painful sharpening will come. It is like forging metal. It strips away the rust to build resilience. Your sharpening hones your character so you can handle what you are called to do. The trials are not there to break you, but to remove the dead weight and build a stronger, sharper version of yourself. While the sharpening hurts, it leaves you equipped, clear, and ready to move forward.

Three: “You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”

Even when you stumble, you aren't expected to figure everything out on your own. Having God’s grace and support makes navigating life's challenges so much more manageable. Big ones, little ones, God can use our mistakes as a valuable teaching lesson, or they can end up helping others. Use your mistakes to draw closer to God, show God’s glory, and teach others.

Four: “The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.”

While the outside world is constantly focused on appearances, your character, values, and emotional well-being are what truly define you. Nurturing that inner core creates resilience, authenticity, and lasting fulfillment. Taking care of your inner self and connecting with God rather than the world is where your source of strength will come from. It is then that you will be able to find the resistance and strong foundation that will help you navigate through this world and the challenges it will bring.

And Five: “On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.”

It’s not about leaving a grand historical monument behind. It’s the web-effect you leave behind. What people will remember is your positive or negative, day-to-day words and actions more than anything else. That ripple effect will either create an inspiring change or a discourage those around you. You can lead them to Christ or away just as quickly.

Next time you use a pencil remember we are like pencils. We do not have to be defined by our outward appearance; it’s our core values and what we hold inside that counts. In life we will face unexpected obstacles that will help sharpen us and trim away our rough edges all to help us achieve God’s purpose for us with clarity and purpose. Like a pencil has an eraser, we too are equipped to erase mistakes and missteps, allowing us to learn, improve, and grow. Like the lead in the pencil, the best of who we are rests safely inside waiting for the right moments for God to let it show. Do not fear the sharpening, instead embrace it. Trust that every mistake can be corrected and is a step forward in Christ. Be intentional about the legacy you leave behind that every surface you touch is left a little brighter than before.
