"But the Lord is faithful and will give you strength and will protect you from the Evil One."
- 2 Thessalonians 3:3
The Bible says the devil roams around like a roaring lion seeking to devour all who follow Jesus. -1 Peter 5:8
Let’s think about this. When a lion goes for his prey, he doesn’t start immediately roaring at it, no. He spends time observing, sneaking around so very quietly not even as to break a single twig. He stalks, he waits for the right moment and just when the prey is at his weakest the lion roars with a deadly pounce. For some animals they are able to run to the safety of their homes or group but for many they fall to the lion’s grip and that’s their sad end.
So, if the devil is out roaming like not only a lion but a roaring lion, he has already found his prey and is pouncing. He has already taken the time to stalk you oh so quietly in a way you don’t see him coming. He knows what to do to catch you at your weakest, what things he can do to upset you and break you, your trigger points. Be it family, job, finances, anything to shake your faith. Then when the time is right and you’re at your lowest, he pounces with hopefully that final blow.
But, unlike the animals, it is the opposite for us. When we turn to Jesus and claim victory in Him, when we run to Jesus for safety, He will hide us under His wings, and we will not only be safe but given strength and comfort to rise above the attacks. It is only those who face those attacks without Jesus that fall victim to the clutches of Satan.
When we are at our weakest and feeling those attacks, it’s easier to get discouraged and forget the promises Jesus has given us. In those times the best thing is to take a step back, take a deep breath and pray for help, comfort and strength.
I was encouraged myself through a recent sermon. The Bible has many episodes of conflict where the devil spends time trying to attack God’s chosen people, even Jesus himself. But each time, ‘Jesus wins! Satan loses.’ Even to the end of time Jesus wins, Satan loses.
Take hope in those promises and allow Jesus to chase that roaring lion away before he has time to pounce.
