Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Spring is around the corner, and you know the saying, “April showers bring May flowers”. Do you enjoy planting gardens? I love planting both a flower garden and a vegetable garden. I’m not as good a gardener as my grandmother or mother, but it is still fun to watch my gardens grow. I especially love flowers, and each year try to come up with different flowers to plant. The colors, the different petals. They bring a smile to my face as they bloom. Since I like to see things in different ways, the idea that a flower garden can be like our soul inspired me. To begin with, when we are baptized God gives us a beautiful garden, our soul.
Imagine your garden with all kinds of beautiful flowers. The colors, the many different petals, some smaller, some taller. Now, this is your garden, and it is yours to take care of and tend to, keeping the weeds away and flowers blooming. As a real garden needs things to stay alive, your soul needs the right things to stay alive.
A garden needs sunshine- our soul needs light in this dark world. Jesus says, ‘I am the light of the world’- John 8:12. Jesus gives us light to live in this world of sin. His light helps us grow and bloom with His love living in us. We can then share the light with others.
A garden needs water to feed the roots and help them grow and not be choked. Our soul needs water to thrive. Jesus says, ‘I am living water’- John 7:38-39. With Him we will never be thirsty. Jesus living in our soul waters us down to our roots and we will thrive.
A garden needs fertilizer throughout the soil to help feed and nourish the flowers to help them grow strong, and bloom. Our soul needs nourishment to stay strong in this world that is seeking to destroy us. Jesus says, ‘I am the bread of life’- John 6:35. With Him our soul will be fully nourished so we can grow and bloom as He created us too.
For a garden to do well the soil needs to be tilled and broken up. In life we will face struggles and problems- John 16:33. God allows these trials to soften and nourish our souls, so we are made perfect to bloom and flourish. These times also help refine us preparing us for Heaven.
Of course, a garden always has weeds that pop up. Unless we pull the weeds, they will overtake the garden and choke out the flowers. We live in a world of sin and the devil is always trying to fill our soul with weeds of temptation, distraction, business, and vices. Jesus has said He will provide a way to overcome- 1 Corinthians 10:13. But we must do our part to live in unity with the Lord. We must make the effort to pull the weeds out of our lives. Studying God's word and prayer are ways that can keep us in step with the Lord so our garden will grow and bloom.
Now we have a choice to make. We were given this beautiful garden with flowers that are suited to us and designed for each of us individually. This is God's gift to us. God provides all we need for our garden to grow, but it is up to us to tend it and help it flourish and bloom. When we take care of our garden, God will help it grow and bloom as He designed.
As you are out and about this spring and notice the beautiful flowers or as you plant your own, take time to think about your soul, your heart, who you are, and how you are a garden God has given you. God is our Nurturer, Supporter, and Encourager. You have been planted where you need to be to follow His plan. Even with all your imperfection and faults, Jesus loves you. He knew, even before you were born, how you'd turn out and still planted you to bloom and flourish.
Yet we will only grow when we nourish our lives and intentionally care for our soul. Just like plants only grow when nourished and cared for. God promises we are not left alone though. He will water us and nourish us through His Word, His guidance, His love, and His care.
We can all bloom like beautiful flowers and become breathtaking disciples for the Lord. Our souls, when in full bloom can be a beautiful witness of God's goodness and glory.
So, go, grow, flourish, and bloom for the Lord. Blossom and share God's beauty of love for everyone. For we are planted in the House of the Lord- Psalm 92:12-13.
One of the best things about taking time to study the Bible is that we can learn so much more about Jesus and how we can become more like Him and find our place in this world sharing the good news He has to offer. Also Jesus is happy when we make time to talk with Him because He likes hearing from us and wants to share so much with us. As we study God's Word we can find our pathway to joy. Let's continue our study with lesson 3.
