Buzzing with Knowledge

Proverbs 24:13-14, My child, eat honey because it is good. Honey from the honeycomb tastes sweet.  In the same way, wisdom is pleasing to you. If you find it, you have hope for the future, and your wishes will come true.”

We've talked about several bigger animals that not only are a testament of God's wonderful creation but also what we could learn from them and applying those things to our lives. Even the smaller creatures of God's creation can teach us some great things.

Life for a honeybee is busy. When you take a few moments to read about a honeybee you can learn some interesting facts. How long they are in flight, how the pollen is gathered, how much they can carry at a time, how they communicate, and more. It's amazing how just one small creature intricately plays a part in this world. The Honeybee does produce yummy honey for us but without a honeybee to help execute pollen, many plants would cease to exist which in turn would begin to affect mankind. Think about this for a moment. All the details of pollination must work for the bees to thrive, and the plants rely on them for flowering and to bear fruit. So, what can we learn from the honeybee that we can apply to our lives.

1.     Create a buzz- Psalm 16:9, Romans 12:15a

The honeybees have a special dance called the “waggle dance”. There are different patterns they use in this dance to help guide and direct other bees to the perfect flowers with the most nectar. You can imagine the excitement of the bees that join them once a location is found. It can create quite a buzz as they dance and communicate, and it only grows in number as the dance is shared.

We too can spread happiness to others, creating quite a buzz. I love it when I'm with my toddlers at work and we play toddler songs. As my face lights up and I do the motions the kids are soon joining in. When we're happy, when we share the Good News, it will spread to others, and we can create quite a buzz of joy.

2.     Sip life's sweet moments- Psalm 16:11

To us, the honey the bee makes is delicious. As the honey comes together, I am sure the honeybees enjoy the sweetness. But they probably enjoy the nectar more as they gather it and enjoy the simple moments.

Now that my children are adults and I've been married many years, I can say life truly goes by too quickly. It's important to take the time to slow down and enjoy the small moments. If you're like me, take time to capture lots of pictures and memories. It's in those moments we can enjoy our loved ones and capture things God blesses us with daily.

3.     Mind your own beeswax and work together- Proverbs 26:20

When you read the facts about honeybees you will learn they all have different jobs in their colony. Not all gather, not all work in the hive, and so forth. Each bee works at what they are meant to do, and they don't worry about what the other bees are doing, or wish they were doing something else. They stick their nose to the grindstone and get the job done.

Oh, to be like a honeybee and not feel the need to hear, or be the one to spread idle gossip. God created us all to work together to get the job done and we all have our own roles in life. It's simply a matter of minding our own beeswax and leaving the gossip behind us.

4.     Always find your way home- Jeremiah 29:13

Remember the waggle dance of the honeybee? It's like God created them with their own built-in compass. No matter where they go, they always know where their home is.

We all know where we live, where our parents live, and grandparents. They are home for us, usually a safe place. We visited my grandparents so often before they passed, I could easily find my way to their home blindfolded. The same with my parents’ home, I know it so well, I have a built-in compass to their place.

The Lord tells us he is preparing a home for us, a safe place where the world can no longer harm us. But the only way to this home is having a relationship with Him. When we seek the Lord, we will find Him and our spiritual compass will lead us home every time.

5.     Stick close to your honey- John 15:4-5

If you ever visit a beehive, you'll notice that the bees aren't far from it, if not all busy working throughout it. The hive is their whole life, without the hive the honeybees can't exist. Let's not leave out our wonderful queen bee either. The bees will stick close to their “honey” too. Ever see a video of someone needing to lead bees away from something? Capture the queen bee and let her lead the bees away. They will follow because they stick close to her.

If you have a sweetheart in your life, stick close to them. No, you don't have to follow them everywhere but hang out together. When you are close with your “honey”, your relationship will grow stronger and closer.

The Lord is the ultimate and vital part of our life. If we want to blossom, to grow, to live a strong life. We need to stay close to Jesus. He is the vine, He can keep us safe when strong winds blow, He nourishes us, He helps us grow. Like the honeybee, stay close to Jesus and not only thrive but find safety.

6.     Bee yourself- Romans 12:2

Bees are bees and do what they are created to do. They don't try to fly like eagles or run like horses. The busy bee knows no more than to bee themselves.

We are God's wonderful creation in His image. Created to do and accomplish many things. He has given us each gifts, and talents that make us unique individuals. Scripture tells us that you need to be you and not be conformed to the world's idea of who you should be or what you should do to be perfect. Being yourself, being unique away from this world must be our concern. When we do as God has given us and be ourselves, others will come to us as genuine friends and see Jesus living in us. So, always bee yourself.

Fun simple things we can learn from such a small creature. And what delicious honey we get to enjoy from our friends the honeybees.
