Food for My Soul

Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Psalm 119:103-104, "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. "

How many of you like to read? I love writing but I am not an avid reader. I enjoy a good book now and again. There are many benefits to reading and some books can take us on some fun adventures. But how many of us find the time to read?

Now what would you say to a book that has been written in three languages across 3 continents. Would I pique your interest?

What if I said this book is so popular it is the most stolen book. Or that it is the best-selling book in the world. Would you be interested?

If you're one that likes stories filled with adventure, romance, war, honor, love, or something true this is a great book to pick up.

One of the nice things about this book is that there are several stories within the stories, and you can read it at your own pace without feeling you're missing anything.

Have you guessed the book? Before I tell you more, would you pick up a copy and read it? The Bible, God's Word. A great book and different from any other book in history. A book that blows away the competition. A perfect treasure. Its author, God, salvation for its end, and truth, without any error.

The Bible is unique because it leads us to Jesus. Its unique because through its pages we can learn how God wants us to live, why we are here, and where we are going. It gives us hope in a bleak world.

So many of us want to grow our relationship with God and we know reading the Bible is central to that goal, but for many we get discouraged, feel our efforts are fruitless. If we feel we're getting nothing from the texts we read we may wonder, how does this help me grow?

Begin by changing your mindset. Reading your Bible isn't like picking up a story off the shelf and reading through the story where there's a beginning, middle, the crescendo, then the end. When reading the Bible do you ask questions, highlight texts or write them down when they mean something to you? The Bible is not like any ordinary book, so we need to approach our reading in a new way. A way we can become inspired, feel the Lord in our lives and hearts, and grow in Him.

Let's do some note taking in our mind or on paper as we see how the Bible can be in every part of our life.

·       When I am tired, the Bible is my bed- Psalm 4:8, Proverbs 3:24

·       In the dark, the Bible is my light- Psalm 119:105, John 8:12

·       When I am hungry, the Bible is my bread- Jeremiah 15:16, Matthew 4:4

·       When I am afraid or fearful, the Bible is my armor for the fight- Ephesians 6:10-18,

  2 Corinthians 6:7

·       When I am sick, the Bible is healing medicine- Psalm 103:3, Psalm 147:3

·       When I am lonely, the Bible shows me Jesus is my friend- John 15:15, Romans 5:8

·       When I am at work, the Bible is my tool- 1 Peter 4:10, 2 Timothy 2:15

·       When I am at play, the Bible is my harp or happy song- Psalm 105:1, Psalm 49:4,

Psalm 101:1

·       When I lack wisdom, the Bible is my school- Proverbs 9:9, Psalm 32:8

·       When I am sinking, the Bible is solid ground- Psalm 40:1-3, Psalm 26:12

·       When I am cold, the Bible is my fire- Jeremiah 23:29, Zephaniah 3:17

·       When I am lost, the Bible is my guide- Psalm 37:23, Psalm 121:1-2

·       When I am tossed in the storm, the Bible is my shelter- Psalm 91:2, Proverbs 18:10

The Bible is God breathed, written by human authors, but superintended by the Holy Spirit. When we open the pages, we will find what we are looking for because God's words were written for you in a special way and for me in a special way. When we read through the pages God will give light to our searching hearts and we will grow in Christ. Remember, we don't change the message, the message changes us.

So, go ahead, pick up the world's best seller and enjoy some quality reading today and every day.

Spurgeon describes these writings of David as the “Golden Alphabet“. They are precious because the words of the Lord are more valuable than gold. All other currencies of “worldly wisdom” are cheap counterfeits compared to the profound, but practical precepts from God, clearly leading us on the right path through life. A path not without problems, but accompanied by our Savior Jesus and His solutions. Each word of God brings an element of spiritual nutrition and when digested in the Spirit brings the soul strength and peace. Uniquely, beautifully curated by Christ. Today we're going to do our extra study a little different. Instead of the next Bible study today why don't you take some time to go back through the verses we read earlier, maybe even mark them in your Bible as encouragement daily. Have a great day!
