Have You Been Thumped Today?

“But Lord, you are our father. We are like clay, and you are the potter; your hands made us all.” -Isaiah 64:8

Have you ever watched a potter and his clay? At first there is a lot of molding, shaping, reshaping, pushing, smooshing, and more reshaping. Once the potter is happy with his pot, he takes it to put on the finishing touches, the baking process. While in the baking process, he will check how solid the pot is by taking it out of the oven and thumping it. If it “sings” it’s ready. If it “thuds” it’s placed back in the oven.

We’ve talked before many times about the big trials we face in life. The molding and reshaping we go through when we face financial struggle, health issues, job troubles, family problems. Each trial helps build our character to become more like Jesus, our Potter.

But our character is also revealed by the little thumps in life. The grumpy parent, the moody child, a frustrating spouse, the late-night phone calls, meals burnt, pile of dishes, the “you’ve got to be kidding me” mess again. Life’s little inconveniences of day to day are little thumps that can bring out the worst in us. Bumper to bumper traffic, another detour, someone cuts you off in line, dirty clothes on the floor, family leaves a trail of their stuff all over the house, the boss adds one more to-do on your pile of already to-do’s…. thump, thump, thump.

How do you respond? Do you “sing” or do you go “thud”?

Luke 6:45 “Good people bring good things out of the good they stored in their hearts.” What’s in your heart will reveal your true character when those thumps come.

Colossians 3:23 “In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you are doing it for the Lord, not the people.”

The never-ending laundry, the pile of dishes, the traffic, the job. We can find joy in those times when we work for our Lord, not man. God created this world, He worked and each day He found joy, “It was good”. The best way to find that joy, be thankful. You have a home, family, and work, be thankful.

Our true characteristics are not found in those big trials we endure through but in the thumps of the humdrum day-to-day living. Jesus our Potter has been shaping and molding us but when we’re through the fire do we “sing” or is there a “thud”.

Today when those thumps come, sing and allow God to change your heart. Allow the Potter to mold you and change you to be more like Him.
