Just One Touch

“God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” -Hebrews 13:5b

I am one who does not like anyone touching my hair even just to play with it. Anyone, that is, except my mother. She has really been the only one to cut my hair and style it other than myself and one other lady a few times.

But it’s not the cutting or styling of my mother’s hand that I like. It’s the comfort of her touch. Could be the special mother/daughter bond we’ve formed since I was a child, but there is something in just her touch. It’s relaxing and calming and those crazy, stressful moments in like I enjoy her touch even if it’s just one touch.

This reminded me of a story in scripture where it took just one touch. Jesus had been moving about from place to place healing the blind, lame, sick even those who needed forgiveness. He preached of heaven and God, He healed, and He showed kindness and love. One day while walking He became surrounded by those seeking His attention which made it difficult for everyone to talk with Him. In the midst of the crowd there was a woman who had been sick for many years. She knew she needed Jesus, but He couldn’t be reached.

So, in faith that she would be healed she believed with all her heart that just one touch, even on His garment and she would be healed. She didn’t need the attention on herself, she didn’t need Jesus’ words, she just needed the one touch and she would be healed.

The beauty of this story is that through just a touch Jesus knew power had gone out from Him to heal. He stopped everything and asked who touched Him. After a few moments the woman revealed herself falling at Jesus’ feet trembling telling Him what happened. And Jesus’ words so sweet, “Daughter, be of good comfort, thy faith has made thee whole, go in peace.’ -Luke 8:43-48

Sometimes all it takes is just one touch to bring comfort, healing, peace to a troubled soul. And, although I enjoy the comforting touch of my mother’s hands, I know I can find greater comfort in Jesus. I can’t physically touch Him but in my prayers, I know He is present, He is comforting and if need be, He is healing. Through the Holy Spirit He has shown Himself to me. I don’t always feel His presence as strong as those times I am agonizing but I have felt His arms of comfort when I’ve needed it the strongest.

Jesus promises never to forsake or leave us we just need to have faith, believe as the woman, that even, just one touch can heal. Jesus is here for us and He is listening, all you have to do when you reach the end of your rope is reach up and touch the hem of His garment.
