Twinkle

“Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life.” - Philippians 2:15b-16a

‘Twinkle, twinkle little star…”

This year I am teaching astronomy to my daughter. We are learning about the different constellations and galaxies and how stars are made.

For us, we live more in the country, so I’ve enjoyed going outside at night with her and looking up at the many stars trying to find out what we’re learning.

It’s beautiful looking at the night sky on a clear night. ‘Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky’. Some stars shining brightly and some actually twinkling.

In that favorite lullaby we’ve all sang to our children, there is a fifth verse we really don’t sing. It begins, ‘As your bright and tiny spark, light the travelers in the dark…’

Looking at the twinkling stars that light up the night skies brings what Daniel 12:3 says to a better understanding. “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky. Those who teach others to live right will shine like the stars for ever and ever.”

We are all called to shine for Jesus. If you feel you can’t be a bright light like the stars, don’t worry. You are only asked to do your best and when we all do our best in shining for Jesus, we can light up the sky together like the many stars.

Even constellations can’t stand alone, they need stars with them. Galaxies are formed by many stars.

We are not asked to stand alone; we are asked to become wise with Jesus and then share what we know. It’s like lighting many candles. One flame passes the flame till the whole bunch of candles are lit.

The thing with stars, they don’t try to be stars they just are. Jesus came to this world to be a light for us and when we ask Jesus into our hearts, we don’t have to try to be a bright light, we just are because through Jesus, God brings spiritual light into our lives

(1 John 1:1-4).

Like verse five says, the bright light helps travelers at night. We too can help bring this world out of darkness and into God’s light. As effortlessly as a star hanging in the night sky, our light makes a difference, we simply must shine. Follow what Paul says in Philippians to hold firmly to the Word of life and we can draw others to the source of our hope: Jesus.

Are you twinkling today?
